Dewberry Consultants’ Water Resources Engineering Department in Fairfax, Virginia has an immediate opening for an Environmental Manager position. Candidates should have strong background in supervising staff and technical experts, setting and monitoring budgets, developing project plans, project monitoring, risk assessment, developing a positive working atmosphere, and be client focused.  Must have an interest in wetland characterization, botany, stormwater management, environmental site characterization, computer assisted mapping and drafting, and staff and project management.  This job will involve 10-20% of outdoor fieldwork at sites primarily within 200 miles of the office however occasional overnight travel will be required.  Fieldwork may require candidate to walk over uneven terrain up to 8 hours a day and carry heavy equipment.  A successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4-year institution and have 7-15 years of experience.  Previous exposure to or experience with Virginia, Maryland and Federal permitting, wetland delineation, environmental site assessments (ESAs), Microstation, AutoCAD, and ArcMap are beneficial but are not required.  The position is full time and located in Dewberry’s Fairfax Virginia office.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising junior and senior level staff
  • Setting project budgets and assisting with proposals
  • Managing projects and budgets
  • Planning and conducting field delineations of wetlands and Waters of the US
  • Preparing delineation reports, functional assessments, mitigation plans, and jurisdictional determinations
  • Preparing permit applications under Sections 404/401 of the Clean Water Act
  • Coordinating with state, federal, and local regulators as appropriate
  • Conducting vegetation and wildlife habitat surveys
  • Conducting threatened and endangered species surveys
  • Researching and writing NEPA documents
  • Preparing consultations with the US Fish and Wildlife Service
  • Preparing Section 106 consultations with the State Historic Preservation Officer
  • Conducting permit compliance monitoring
  • Assisting in conducting environmental site assessments

Required Skills & Required Experience

  • 7-15 years of experience
  • Supervisory experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, geology, chemistry or a related field
  • Excellent communication skills, including both oral and written
  • Organizational skills and the ability to perform detail-oriented work are required
  • Ability to manage multiple projects
  • Ability to set priorities
  • Experience managing project budgets
  • Good working knowledge of word-processing and integrated software applications, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience delineating in the Eastern Mountain and Piedmont Region and Coastal Plain
  • Previous experience preparing Joint Permit Applications
  • Ability to become a certified arborist
  • Previous experience in Maryland and/or the District of Columbia.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microstation, and the ArcGIS suite of software.
