Dewberry is seeking a Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Department Manager to manage and expand SUE operations for Dewberry’s Carolinas based survey practice. The position may be based in any of the following office locations: Danville, VA; Raleigh, NC; or Charlotte, NC. Candidate must be able to work in a fast paced environment, manage multiple projects, coordinate daily with key office staff, prepare proposals and be successful in business development and managing staff. 


  • Leads the planning, coordinating and execution of SUE projects.
  • Coordinates with other project leads, clients and utility providers.
  • Recruits staff to maintain and grow SUE practice.
  • Manages/prepares project budgets, schedule and monthly invoicing.
  • Assists with business development and preparation of contracts.
  • Follows policy and procedures to confirm all deliverables are done accurately and efficiently.
  • Manages SUE equipment inventory and maintenance.
  • Trains field staff in the use of vacuum excavation and utility designation equipment.
  • Maintains safety records, performs job hazard analysis and attends damage prevention seminars.

Required Skills & Required Experience

  • Bachelor degree or Associates degree in Engineering, Surveying, or Geomatics preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years of project management in Subsurface Utility Engineering experience is required.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the use of radio-detection toning devices, ground penetrating radar and vacuum excavators.
  • Experience with technical software including AutoCAD and/or Microstation platforms.
  • Must be dependable, conscientious, self-motivated and driven.
  • Must be able to work overtime as required.
  • Must be willing and able to do short term travel.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, good driving record and ability to pass a driving record background check.
