    Architectural Historian


    Dewberry Engineers Inc. (Dewberry) invites applications for a full-time, mid-level, architectural historian position within our environmental group located in the Parsippany, New Jersey office. The qualified candidate will meet the Secretary of the Interior’s (SOI) standards for Architectural History, Historic Preservation Planner or Historic Architecture. Candidates will have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience conducting historic architectural surveys in the greater NYC region as well as the surrounding states. Familiarity and proficiency with federal, state and local regulations and review agencies is required, including Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act, NJDEP Land Use Regulations and New York City Landmarks review.


    The successful candidates will:

    • Possess a minimum of a 4 year degree in architecture, architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or closely related field, with coursework in American architectural history. And one or more of the following:
    • At least five years of full-time experience in research, writing, or teaching in American architectural history or restoration architecture with an academic institution, historical organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution; or
    • Substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the field of American architectural history.
    • At least five years of full-time professional experience on historic preservation projects. Such graduate study or experience shall include detailed investigations of historic structures, preparation of historic structures research reports, and preparation of plans and specifications for preservation projects.

    Required Skills & Required Experience

    • Ability to identify historic preservation issues and identify Areas of Potential Effect (APE). Physical field inspections of APEs will be required.
    • Ability to complete informal and formal Section 106 consultation with Historic Preservation Officers while working with senior cultural resource staff; may occasionally include the drafting of agreement documents.
    • A solid knowledge base about the function and design of historic structures and a demonstrated ability to justify National Register eligibility determinations and assessments of effects in accordance with Section 106. This may include the preparation of historic structures research reports and the identification of appropriate treatment measures for affected historic structures.
    • Ability to effectively coordinate with involved parties to make important decisions about project alternatives and the resolution of adverse effects to historic resources.
