Job Description

Dewberry is currently seeking Construction Inspectors with bridge, roadway, or tunnel inspection experience for projects in the Hampton Roads, VA area. The Senior Construction Inspector function is to monitor the work of contractors to ensure quality control and contract compliance for major transportation construction projects of moderate to considerable complexity.  Inspection duties may include monitoring quality associated with concrete, asphalt, soils, steel, piles, and precast construction activities.  Experience on VDOT bridge construction projects is a plus.  Knowledge of laboratory testing of construction materials and familiarity with AASHTO and ASTM testing protocols is also a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor contractor operations to ensure compliance with plans, contract terms and specifications
  • Coordinate and schedule various phases of construction inspection with the prime contractor and other agencies
  • Review and monitors contractors' plan of operation including MOT
  • Advise contractors of violations and recommend adjustments to operations
  • Recommend changes to construction plans to meet field conditions
  • Make field measurements of pay items and conduct materials testing
  • Maintains and review comprehensive project records including daily diaries, materials notebooks, as-built plans, pay quantity records, progress schedules, work orders, and monthly estimates.

Required Skills & Required Experience

  • Minimum of 6 years of quality inspection construction experience
  • Working knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
  • Working skill in operating computer equipment, mobile devices, software programs and field inspection equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret roadway, bridge, and utility plans and contract specifications
  • Experience in the design, construction, or inspection of driven pile foundations
  • Considerable knowledge of bridge and roadway construction methods, materials, standards and specification
  • Ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine field adjustments
  • VDOT bridge inspector certification a plus
  • Ability to communicate effectively with agency and contractor personnel and the general public.
  • Ability to drive assigned and/or personal vehicles within roadways and project sites to perform construction inspection activities
