Dewberry’s dynamic Raleigh, NC, office, home to approximately 200 design professionals, is seeking an exceptional Assistant Electrical Discipline Manager to join our esteemed Building Services Group. This vibrant team is dedicated to delivering innovative design solutions for a diverse array of major public and private clients across North Carolina and Virginia. As part of our Building Services Group, you will engage in a wide range of impactful projects, including K-12 schools, universities, community colleges, state-owned facilities, correctional institutions, municipal projects, and select commercial ventures.

 

Our Building Services Group is structured into specialized Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Structural, and Technology (MEPST) departments, each led by experienced managers. In this pivotal role, you will leverage your expertise in designing comprehensive building and site electrical systems, including normal and standby power, lighting and controls, fire alarm systems, UPS, and telecommunications.

 

As we expand our project portfolio, we are looking for a proactive Assistant Electrical Discipline Manager who will not only understand the intricacies of our proposals but also lead and allocate the right resources to ensure successful project execution. You will collaborate closely with Project and Client Managers, providing essential engineering support and assembling a skilled design team to meet client expectations and budgetary constraints. Additionally, you will play a key role in direct MEP sales and contribute to our multidisciplinary project efforts. If you have experience with North Carolina and/or Virginia’s State Construction Office requirements, that will be a valuable asset.

Responsibilities

Assistant Electrical Discipline Manager will assist the Building Services Group - Electrical Discipline Manger in leading their department (~10 staff) to effectively and successfully complete projects, including:

  • Growing, mentoring, and developing department staff to allow each person to achieve their maximum potential.
  • Minimum annual evaluations for each direct report.
  • Technical and Quality oversight of all project work for department.
  • Establishing/improving department standards.
  • Adherence to project design schedules.
  • Notification to Project/Client Managers if established project design schedule cannot be met.
  • Adherence to department project budget. Review and provide updates on project budgets at milestone dates. Reviewing discipline budgets weekly.
  • Attention to project scope during the design process to identify potential additional services.
  • Identify department staff performing design of the project, along with a senior staff and EOR as required.
  • Provide general updates of projects (status in the process, tasks to complete, percentage complete currently, etc.)
  • Identify milestone dates when each discipline should provide information, at each phase, to allow sufficient time to good design coordination.
  • Provide 'on-the-spot' advice and decisions, technical and cost estimates.
  • Coordination with all disciplines involved, including outside consultants.
  • Work schedule for discipline showing:
  • Project assignments and priorities
  • Delivery due dates for group project commitment’s
  • Workload/Capacity
  • Organizing staff in a way to allow career advancement, professional development, quality client service, and operational efficiencies to meet business and project financial goals.
  • Taking a highly active role in recruitment of staff in discipline area including networking, recruitment, interviewing and “deal closing.”
  • The Assistant Discipline Manager’s goal is to, when ready, become a Discipline Manager, leading their own department.

Required Skills & Required Experience

  • Accomplished (8+ years of experience) licensed Professional Engineer;
  • Knowledgeable of construction process,
  • Familiar with AIA construction contracts;
  • Self-motivated with highly developed verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience assisting in staff management/department management.
  • Experience supporting design of typical building MEP systems and understanding of document preparation utilizing both CADD and BIM/Revit platforms.
  • Well organized, takes good notes.
  • Good conceptual understanding of plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems with general knowledge of system operation, space requirements, cost.
