Job Description

We are currently seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to join our Raleigh office, where you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our electrical engineering projects.

 

In this key position, you will provide operational and technical guidance to our design teams across all areas of electrical engineering, ensuring that we meet and exceed client expectations and budgetary goals. You will collaborate with a talented team of engineers on a diverse array of private, public, and federal projects, working closely with architectural, mechanical, structural, and other disciplines to deliver comprehensive solutions to our local and regional clients. Your expertise will be essential in providing the operational and technical direction necessary to fulfill our commitments with excellence. You will report directly to the Chief Electrical Engineer.

 

Dewberry’s Raleigh, NC office includes over 200 design professionals, including a large Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Structural (MEPS) Group focused on design services for clients in North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina. Responsibilities

Provide high-level direction to senior electrical engineering staff to allow the Business Unit/Office to effectively operate and successfully complete projects, including:

 

  • Office Operations: Supervise all electrical department managers within an office or business unit for successful intra-office operations, by actively helping those department managers that report to you smoothly run their departments.
  • Service Line Operations: Assist the Chief Electrical Engineer leading MEPS Service Line’s electrical community of practice to ensure successful inter-office electrical operations, by actively participating in the community of practice events and performing delegated tasks from the Chief.
  • Quality Management: Ensure electrical department managers are consistently applying and complying with corporate quality management processes and procedures.
  • Technical Management: Ensure electrical department managers are providing timely and adequate guidance and quality oversight, including code review, of all project work involving electrical engineering.
  • Staff Development Oversight: Ensure electrical department managers are providing adequate technical training and development of staff by providing guidance and mentoring of managers.
  • Standards Development Oversight: Ensure electrical department managers are establishing and improving standards, practices, guidelines, and specifications for their electrical discipline area. Principal shall lead the development of their office electrical standards and coordinate those standards through the Chief Engineer across offices.
  • Engineer of Record on select projects as needed.
  • Provide 'on-the-spot' advice and decisions - technical and cost estimates. Principal engineer is the top electrical engineer in an office unless electrical issue involves other offices in the service line then the Chief Engineer presides.
  • Coordinates with client/project managers and department managers within an office to resolve electrical engineering conflicts.
  • Office Organizational Management: Assist Office/Business Unit Manager to ensure successful office operations, including advice on staff organizational structure and office procedures.

Required Skills & Required Experience

  • Accomplished electrical engineer/PE with 25+ years of progressive technical and staff management experience in the design of power distribution, lighting, life safety, and telecommunications systems
  • Experience should include technical oversight of multiple projects with proven success, providing technical oversight on projects that meet contract specifications and technical standards to the client on time and within budget
  • Strong leader with a track record of building and maintaining electrical department operations
  • Self-motivated with highly developed verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
