Responsibilities

In this role, you will deploy to a disaster site to support FEMA in the delivery of a disaster recovery program. As a Claims Specialist, you may support the disaster recovery operation in roles such Claims Reviewer, Quality Control Specialist or Appeals Specialist.  Claims Specialists work with the claimant or claimant representative to assist with claim submissions, including identifying required documentation to complete a proof of loss.  They review claims of disaster-related structure damage to assess program eligibility, identify and document eligible losses, and process the claims in accordance with current policy, guidance and procedure to provide compensation as soon as possible. Claim Specialists make recommendations on eligible claim compensation by providing a detail report to the authorizing official. You may review others’ work for quality assurance and control, or review claimant appeal of a claim denial to determine feasibility.

Required Skills & Required Experience

  • High School Diploma
  • A minimum of five years of combined experience in claim/case processing roles including customer service, data entry, reviewing, and evaluating various types of disaster related losses.
  • Policy Interpretation: Ability to understand and interpret complex insurance policy and federal policy language, including relevant statutes, regulations, policies, guidance, and directions.
  • Technical Knowledge: Disaster-related knowledge and background to accurately assess losses, damages, repairs, and replacement costs.
  • Clear and Effective Communication: Customer service, excellent written and verbal communication skills and knowledge and ability to explain policy and regulations to claimants, FEMA staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Use of Technology: Proficiency in using claims management software, databases, and other technology tools that facilitate claim processing, documentation, and communication. Must be proficient with MS Office Suite applications (Word, Excel and Outlook).
  • Proficiency with Xactimate software is preferred.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and customer relations skills.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen capable of passing a federal background investigation to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
