Job Description

Dewberry is currently seeking a motivated Senior Environmental Scientist in the Mid-Atlantic region. This position offers flexibility to be in our Fairfax, Richmond, Virginia Beach, or Roanoke, Virginia offices or Owings Mills, Maryland office. This full-time opening will provide the applicant with the opportunity to work as a part of a highly collaborative team in all facets of the environmental services we provide, including wetland science, regulatory permitting, NEPA documentation, and construction? compliance in the Mid-Atlantic region. The successful candidate will be heavily involved in project management, staff professional development and growth, mentoring, training, and quality control management. Typical projects involve private, locality, state, and federal agency clients in the following regulatory permitting markets: transportation, land development, energy, resiliency, and utilities. The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of experience working in the environmental and natural resources fields with a focus on state and federal permitting and coordination with regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Execute, coordinate, and lead complex environmental permitting processes, NEPA assessments, and large-scale environmental assessment activities with internal/external clients and regulatory agencies.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to develop project staffing plans and budgets to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Provide mentorship and support of mid-level and junior staff, including reviewing work for accuracy and clarity and providing constructive feedback and career development guidance.
  • Supervise staff as necessary to ensure assignments are completed in a timely manner by prioritizing tasks.
  • Assist team members with fieldwork, technical reports, technical reports, agency coordination, and quality control.
  • Prepare and/or oversee proposals/pursuits, provide technical input, contribute to proposal writing, and engage with pursuit teams.
  • Lead proposal preparation, contract review and execution, and manage project activities with a focus on quality delivery and scope/budget/schedule adherence.

Required Skills & Required Experience

  • 10+ years of applicable experience, including project management experience
  • B.S. in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Forestry, Wildlife Biology, or a related field
  • Environmental certifications including Professional Wetland Delineator (PWD), Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS), Virginia State Waters Delineator (VSWD), ISA Certified Arborist, or similar certification is preferred
  • Design/Build experience is preferred
  • Proficiency with one or more of the following ArcMap/GIS, AutoCAD and MicroStation is preferred
  • Knowledge of Virginia and Maryland environmental regulations and permitting, regulation submittals, wetland or environmental design, and a NEPA background is preferred
  • Experience leading collaborations with scientists, engineers, and subconsultants for large and complex transportation and land development projects
  • Experience coordinating project activities with clients and project teams, including regulatory agency coordination
  • Knowledge and understanding of complex regulatory issues and recent regulatory changes
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once
  • Desire to work in a team environment

The projected range for this position is $124,000 - $164,000 annually. Depending upon other factors, i.e., skills, experience, location, market conditions, the range may vary slightly.
